The nation's debt has now reached 100% of GDP. That means we owe the total amount of all goods and services produced in the United States to someone. Back in the old days when responsible people roamed the earth, that was called bankruptcy. Of course that was before the asteroid of entitlements and political stupidity wiped out the responsible people.
The last time the debt was this large a chunk of the US economy was in 1947, in the immediate post-war period. Granted, we are fighting two unnecessary wars right now, but the big difference between then and now is the size of the entitlement programs. Back then, entitlements weren't even a blip on the budgetary radar screen, whereas today a vast sea of political slaves roam the landscape. Yup, I said it. The Federal government, through political pandering and vote-whoring, has created a vast society of people who have been brainwashed into believing the Federal government is the single most important entity and provider in their lives. Political slaves. There was a time when if you had to accept food stamps you were ashamed, now it's a point of personal pride, or at the very least a civil right - don't hate me because I'm right.
To contrast, the last time we all thought the world was going to end, during the worst recession in my life in 1981, the debt was 31% of GDP.
It's time to grow up America. We should be more worried about the economic futures of our children and less worried about woodpeckers in Virginia and whether the world is fair or not. Trust me, the world is not fair, and no matter how much money you take from me, you're not going to make it fair.
